Geek Christmas Gifts 2012

GO HERE FOR MY 2013 GEEK CHRISTMAS LIST

Assuming we make it to Christmas this year….think Mayan calendar…here are some cool GEEK gifts to buy your favorite NERD for Christmas.  🙂

Thanks to former AltamontCowork coworkers Tom and Dave, the Gardner twins, for helping pick geeky additions to this list.

Bluetooth Handset Gloves

What nerd would not want these?

Rolling Alarm Clock

For our 21 year old at college who cannot seem to get up in the morning!

rolling alarm clock

Microsoft Surface Tablet

Hey…it’s new.  Geeks like new.  Besides the TV commercial is kinda cool.

Tesla Car of the Year

For the rich geek in your life.  Or poor one like me who would love it!  🙂

Big Bang Theory DVDs (hey…are DVDs old technology?)

If you love the gang….get it on DVD before DVDs are obsolete.

Magic Wand Remote Control

Harry would be proud!

Nerf-like Bow and Arrow

I have plenty of targets at work…

Dr. Who Gifts (geologically slow web site….)

I never watched Dr. Who.  Apparently I am not geeky enough.

Video Spy Helicopter

I want one!  Just imagine the various uses….

Bilbo Baggins Bobblehead

Get your GEEK on for The Hobbit” movie in December.  I re-read the book just to refresh my memory of the adventures of  Bilbo and his 13 friends.

Nook HD and Kindle Fire HD

What geek would not like these.  Books, games, video, Internet all in glorious HD.  GEEK ON!

Old Fashioned Telephone Handset for your Smartphone

I found site wandering around the Internet…I may add more from it later.

GO HERE FOR MY 2013 GEEK CHRISTMAS LIST

Buy your geek a great Christmas gift.  But what to get?  Here is what I (and a few friends) would like.  Yup…Geeks all!  🙂  This list is in random order, but, within chaos you can find order.

iPad2

This is pretty easy.  As a video conferencing geek, the video conferencing apps on this are sweeet.  But overall, the iPad2 should warm the heart of your favorite geek.

PlayStation 3D Display with 3D Glasses

3D in movies and, now, 3D on your TV…..a waste of money until they can get it right (my own opinion).  However, 3D in a game?  Wow!  That would be cool, if it can be done right (How to judge?  Go to Disneyland or Disneyworld…you will find 3D done well).

GoPro HD Hero 2 Camera

I love this!  Stick it on your bike, your head, whatever….then go out and have fun!

Nest Learning Thermostat

Friend David Maldow suggested this one.  Very cool!  A thermostat with Apple roots.  You can access it via the Internet using your computer or mobile device.  Extremely cool!

Swiss Army Knife

What geek could fix anything without the proper tools?  I love this golden oldie.  A must for anyone anywhere.

Logitech M510 Laser Mouse

I need a mouse.  The laptop keypad does not work for me.  I have a laser mouse just like this and I can use it on virtually any surface. Great tool for the mobile geek.

Nook Tablet or Kindle Fire

If you like color, a relatively fast tablet for surfing the Internet, watching movies, playing games, or reading magazines (not for hours of reading or sitting outside reading books…sorry) or newspapers….these are great.  Unlike the iPad2, these mobile devices are basically just  “consumers” or “watchers”.  With the iPad2 you can also create or “produce”.   Thus the price differential..

Nook Simple Touch

If your geek is like me he/she likes to READ.  The color tablet’s don’t do it…you can’t read for hours without eyestrain, or outside in the bright sun, on a color thingy.  The e-ink readers are the best, and since I like to go to our local (Tracy, CA) Barnes & Noble STORE…the Nook Simple Touch is the Nook for me.

Keurig K-Cup Coffee Brewer

I like this.  After a long geeky day there is nothing better than a good cup of coffee to keep you awake for the next 50 or 100 lines of code, or the last level of your favorite game.

At AltamontCowork, I could charge $1.00 if a member (or guest) wants a mug of coffee that they choose!

SodaStream Home Soda Maker

Another cool new item.  Again, if I could charge $1.00 at AltamontCowork for your own soda…I think I could help pay the bills!

Sharp Aquos 80″ HDTV

When it comes to watching movies at home (since we do movie reviews for charity, we watch a lot of movies at home) there are two requirements: great audio and a great BIG screen.  Awesome!  Only problem is room….

Lexar 128 gig SD card

Again bigger is better…more pictures, more movies, more data, more, more…128 gig Wow!

Books

Don’t forget the old fashioned BOOK.

If your geek is like me, Fantasy is a favorite reading genre.  I am in the middle of Book #2 of “A Game of Thrones” (see TracyReaderDad’s Book Review) series (which is also an HBO TV series).  I am loving it!

Happy Holiday Season to everyone!

Barnes & Noble Introduces a New Nook

Surfing the Internet today I spotted this article from the NY Times stating that a new Nook eReader has been introduced!

Very cool.

Here are some basics of the $139 eReader:

It is WiFi only, it uses e-ink technology so glare will not be a problem, the entire display is touch screen, they claim the battery can last (without WiFi turned on) for 2 days, and it has a slot for SD memory expansion.

It weighs 7.48 ounces, and is as thin as a #2 pencil.  It is 6.5 inches tall and 5 inches wide.

Unless I missed it, the article does not say anything about an Android OS or Android apps?  I’ll dig a bit more after I post this….

Here is a page comparing the new Nook to the Kindle 3.

And a page showing the specs….no word about Android…how interesting.  Found it! It is Android (it is on the Nook / Kindle compare page), but, guess what?  No web browsing.  Not sure if that was smart….

Anyway….this looks really cool….I may have to request one for my 60th…ouch.

GO HERE FOR MY 2013 GEEK CHRISTMAS LIST

Let’s see….what would I want for Christmas this year?

It has to be something geeky cool….just like me.

How about:

1. X-Box Kinect

Pretty cool how they use the human body as the controller rather than a device.  Pretty geeky.  And now I am hearing about Kinect Sex….pretty kinky to go with geeky.  Cool.   Of course…I’ll need an X-Box to go with it…duh.  I wonder if it will someday be an XXX-Box?

2. Any Cool Smart Phone

Don’t care if it is an iPhone, Android based phone, or Blackberry.  If it suits your needs….gotta have it.  But then again….you probably already do!

3. iPad

OK….maybe you don’t need one, but, it would be geeky freakin’ cool to have.  I can just see me on the throne with only e-magazines to read….how cool.

3. Color Nook (or other e-reader thingy)

I sat down and played with one of these a week or so ago….VERY geeky cool.

Gotta have it.

4. Flip HD Video Cam (or similar device)

I like these.  Take a video, upload it to your computer easy as 3.14.  Heck I’ll take one….I’ll take Paris too, at least for a day or so.  🙂  (See #1…)

5. My Passport Essential SE (1 Terabyte) Drive

I have one of the first WD Terabytes….this one is slick looking.  Small enuf to carry with you, big enuf to hold a lot of digital stuff.  Very geeky.  Backup!

6. Sony LED HDTV (or other LED HDTV)

Don’t give a crap about 3D, but, LED is a new interesting geeky technology (and it should be earth friendly and last a long time).  Get the biggest one you can find.  Then get Avatar and have a geekin movie party!

7. Digital SLR Camera with Lenses

When I press the geekin button I want a camera that will take that picture WHEN I asked for it to be taken….not 5 years later.  I want one!  I did my Master’s Thesis using an old Canon SLR camera (film of course) with multiple lenses.  I love that camera…still have it, just don’t use it (again….see #1).   Best Buy has the one shown in the picture….

8. Netgear Dual Band Wireless Router

I had the other one and was rebooting it twice a day or more.  The Netgear has been rock solid and is just as easy to set-up as the one you are used to.  And it is pretty with that big blinking light.  Geeky cool stuff….

9. Black Box Voice and Data Tool Kit

To replace the kit that was stolen from me.  Like the thief knows how to run cable, tone it out, and punch it down on a 110 block.  Give me a break….what a dipshit.  I hope he has a miserable Christmas….

Buy it here.

10.  Real HD Video Camera (any make)

Sometimes you just gotta get your HD going on.  Looking at video taken with my old camcorders (on our HDTV) is lacking.  I want 1080p or better!  (Joleen got me started on the cameras for this list…Thanks!)

With these gifts, you are sure to have a Happy Geek Christmas 2010 !!

🙂

Christmas Gifts for Your Geek

GO HERE FOR MY 2013 GEEK CHRISTMAS LIST

Christmas is fast approaching. In the interest of Geeks everywhere, here are my top 7 gifts that that special Geek on your list may appreciate. Hmmmmm, he/she may even even help you with your homework, and depending on the cost of the gift, that offer may extend for a lifetime!

Visit my web site for more interesting technology trials and articles.

#7

A Terabyte hard drive. Being able to store massive numbers of digital pictures, movies, graphics, and other very large files is fast becoming an necessity. Just a few short years ago, a TeraByte of storage was available only in the largest computing centers. Now you can plop these hard drives on your desk. Truly amazing.

#6

A wireless router for your home network. I love the ability to move my work location around the house. An inexpensive router (like my Linksys $49.00 unit) works really well. Just be sure to secure it properly.

#5

For those of us who refuse to stop and ask for directions, a Garmin nuvi 350 pocket GPS navigator is the answer. Now we can have our own personal, pocket sized, navigator for virtually anywhere we travel.

#4

Apple iPod Touch. The iPod Touch is a neat bit of technology. Using the same (really slick) user interface as the iPhone, Apple has added WiFi connectivity to the iPod making this a wonderful addition for the geek who also loves music. It could use more memory, but, the 16 Gig version is plenty large enough to get started.

#3

Digital Picture Frame. OK, I actually purchased the Phillips digital picture frame last Christmas. My wife thought it was stupid, but, now, every time we take pictures, I simply pop the Sony memory card out of my camera, put it in the picture frame, and we can see the pictures change before us. Super easy to use and very nice quality.

#2

Blu-Ray high definition player. I’m giving my opinion here (one that I have NOT given until now, see this post). If Disney sticks with their choice of Blu-Ray, then I will buy a Blu-Ray. There is no way I will go without seeing “Pirates” in HD.

#1

A 1080p, 1920 x 1080 resolution High Definition TV. It does not matter what kind. The picture quality of high definition TV is an experience not to be missed. I often tell my family that our TV has a better picture than our local movie theater, and we have an HDTV with lesser resolution.
